In this chapter we consider the mobile infrastructure from a mobile application developer’s perspective. We start by describing the characteristics of several mobile device types, including pagers, cellular telephones, PDAs, Tablet PCs, and Laptop PCs. We then describe a mobile device’s basic components and capabilities from a hardware perspective. Finally, we discuss several connection methods that exist to establish a connection between a mobile device and a backend network, server, and application.
